Will You Gain Weight When Going Through Menopause?

When you go through menopause, you may notice that you start to spread out a little more easily. And with all of the changes your body is going through, this can make the whole experience even harder than should be. One of the main reasons woman gain weight during this time is that as we age, our muscle mass starts to diminish while our fat increases. Here are a few ways to combat the weight gain that can often happen during menopause, and what you can do to work towards reducing and preventing it.

Be active!

It’s important that you are being active in your everyday life, and there are a lot of options out there for you these days. Everyone is different in how their body moves, and what activities they should be doing. Be sure you talk to your doctor about the best exercises for you, and how often you should be doing them.

You can also find ways to sneak in a few extra steps in your day by parking further away from the grocery store doors. Another great tactic is instead of emailing or calling co-workers when you are both in the office, just go ahead and walk to where they are to get answers to your questions. You can also turn your weekends into active projects such as starting a garden, washing your car, or walking around a farmers market.

Focus on what foods you eat, and how much you eat

As we age, we need to take in fewer calories in order to lose extra pounds and maintain a healthy weight. This means choosing foods that are more nutrient rich than we had to in our thirties and forties.

Stay away from foods that are high in fat, and make sure you get enough calcium, fresh fruits and vegetables, and iron. Also make sure you are drinking plenty of water, and limiting your alcohol intake.

Talk to a friend

There is no reason that you should have to go through this time in your life alone. Talk to a friend who understands the weight gain that is associated with menopause, or someone who has been through the experience. If you don’t know anyone who has been through it, then you can always find a support group to be part of. Your doctor can help guide you in the right direction when you feel that you need to have someone to talk to you.

Talk to your doctor

Always talk to your doctor before starting a new diet and exercise plan. You should also be sure that you ask them any pressing questions you might have about menopause, and the side effects such as weight gain.
