Weight Management During Pregnancy

“Eating for two” is an old expression, but it’s one that’s often still used today. There was a time when not much concern was given to pregnancy weight gain, as a significant amount of weight will be gained during the process.

However, the “anything goes” attitude of the past has faded away as women have realized it is much too easy to over-gain during pregnancy.

Many modern moms-to-be are concerned with weight management during pregnancy for her own health, well-being, and post-partum aesthetics.

However, it can be hard to know how to balance both baby and mother’s needs during this time. Here are some tips for managing weight safely during pregnancy.

Do NOT Try to Lose Weight During Pregnancy

Even if you were trying to lose weight before becoming pregnant, restricting your food intake can be harmful to your baby. The most important thing is that your growing baby and your body get enough nutrients to be strong and healthy.

There will be plenty of time after pregnancy for weight loss. You may lose weight naturally in the beginning, due to morning sickness and other factors, but you should never risk trying to lose weight with restrictive diets during pregnancy.

Understand What’s Normal

Talk to your doctor about how much weight you should expect to gain during pregnancy, based on your height and current weight. It’s easier to maintain a healthy weight if you know what to expect and aim for. You should be flexible with this number, naturally, but it is a good idea to have a reference.

Eat Healthfully

Strange and sinful cravings are a major part of pregnancy for many women, but it’s important not to overindulge. It’s better for both you and your baby if the majority of your diet consists of healthful food, with a few treats to satisfy your cravings. Keeping a food diary and purchasing healthful foods are good ways to stay on track.

Continue with Exercise

Exercising during your pregnancy will benefit you greatly during and after pregnancy. Being in shape will make it easier to lose weight after pregnancy, and you’ll have more control over weight maintenance during pregnancy. Always check with your doctor to get his or her professional opinion regarding what is OK to do during pregnancy.

Body Contouring After Pregnancy

It’s important to give your body ample time to bounce back after pregnancy. Carrying and giving birth to a child produces many significant changes to the shape of the body, and it takes time for skin and muscles to return to normal.

Sometimes, however, the pre-pregnancy shape cannot be regained using natural methods of diet, exercise, and time. That’s where new, minimally invasive body contouring procedures come into play.
