Whether you’re healthy and want to get more involved in the fight against breast cancer, you have a family history of the disease, or it’s just time to give your body the best defense against it, here are five ways to get started in January. Even if fighting breast cancer isn’t on your list of New Year’s Resolutions, there are plenty of categories that these tips can fit into. Take the time to incorporate them into 2016, and you’ll be glad you did.
Make your gynecologist appointment
In January, we often gain a bit of newfound energy and start checking items off our list. If you’re due for a doctor’s appointment, go ahead and schedule it. If you don’t need one quite yet, then mark the day on your calendar that you should call and make the appointment. In the meantime, continue giving yourself self-breast exams.
Drink more water
Water plays a huge factor in our health, especially the health of our breasts. It not only flushes out our system, but it gives us the energy we need to make it through the day. Start by replacing one diet or sugary drink a day with a cup of water. You can gradually increase the amount you drink as the year goes on.
Have a good attitude
We know that hearing you or someone you love has been diagnosed with breast cancer can be devastating, but the best thing you can do is have a positive attitude for you and those around you. Instead of focusing on the bad, focus on what’s good in your life. You’ll be amazed how much this small shift in your mind can improve your day. Invest in humorous books, and never think that something that makes you laugh is a waste of time.
Do your research
Take the time to research super foods and other healthy options available to you that can prevent cancer. The more knowledge you have, the more productive you can be in your efforts. This will also help you get involved in a like-minded community that is working towards the same goals as you. Begin by focusing your studies on one food category such as fruits, and then build on that knowledge throughout the year. You can’t learn everything in a day, but you’ll be impressed with how much you can learn over the course of a year.
Start walking
Yep – fighting breast cancer is as easy as putting one foot in front of the other. Exercise is a great way to ward of diseases, but don’t over think it. Do some research for walks in your areas that support breast cancer awareness and then start training today. Not only will you have something to look forward to on your calendar, but you’ll be doing your part to fight and create awareness for a great cause.
